Reading is a large town in the English county of Berkshire. Sitting within the Thames Valley, Reading is a major business and commercial centre that lies at the confluence of the Thames and the River Kennet. The town has a long history as an important site in Berkshire and southern England, with Reading Abbey having emerged as a prominent monastery with royal connections during medieval times. Reading also played a very significant role in the English revolution of 1688 and was in fact the only place that saw military action during what was a largely bloodless conflict. Today Reading is associated in no small part with its best-known sports clubs in Reading Football Club and the rugby union team London Irish. The town is also popularly associated with the Reading Festival, one of the largest annual music events staged anywhere in the UK.
