Ho Chi Minh City is traditionally known as Saigon. This is the largest city in Vietnam, and is also referred to by the abbreviations HCMC or HCM. Ho Chi Minh City was the former capital of South Vietnam, when the city fell to the North Vietnamese in 1975 it was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. Many foreigners and locals still use the name Saigon. The centre of the city is specifically referred to as the Saigon district. Situated on the banks of the Saigon River, the city is 60 km (37 miles) from the South China Sea. Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is 1,760 km (1,090 miles) north of Ho Chi Minh City.

Transport Information

The closest major airport to Ho Chi Minh City is Tan Son Nhat International Airport. This airport is 13 km (8 miles) from the city centre. Ho Chi Minh City serves as a terminal for many Vietnam Railways train routes in the country. The Saigon railway station is where you catch the Reunification Express which runs from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi with stops at cities and provinces along the line. Located on the Saigon River, the city also serves as an active passenger and commercial port. There are a number of buses to other areas in Vietnam.
