Watford is a large town in the county of Hertfordshire and on the outskirts of Greater London. Having begun life as the centre of an important agricultural area, the town now forms part of the enlarged urban areas surrounding central London and bordered by the M25 motorway, which encompasses the outlying areas around the capital. Watford, though, has a significant economy and cultural history of its own, as well as a top football club in Watford FC. The town itself was first established by Anglo Saxons and its recorded history dates back over a millennium. The town has long been at a crossroads for travellers heading to and from London and it has numerous historic sites of interest and is close to a variety of rural areas and picturesque regions.

Setting up your business here

A key asset for Watford as a business location is its close proximity to all areas of Greater London, including the City and the West End. It is particularly well positioned in terms of railway transport, with lines running through the town directly to London Euston, to the south and to the major cities in the Midlands and northern areas of England. Organisations operating from office space in Watford include Sigma Pharmaceuticals, British Waterways and the retailer TK Maxx. The pub chain operator JD Wetherspoon is headquartered in Watford, while the lottery operator business The Camelot Group is based in nearby Rickmansworth.

Things to do in Watford

There is always plenty to see and do in and around Watford. If you fancy some retail therapy then head for the Harlequin Shopping Centre – now known as Intu Watford – the largest in Hertfordshire, or central Watford where there are plenty of chain stores and locally-run outlets. For more tranquil surroundings and great places to stroll around, try Cassiobury Park, a popular local nature reserve with attractions for adults and children alike. Meanwhile, the Watford Palace Theatre hosts a wide range of performers throughout the year and offers great shows at reasonable prices. For excellent places to eat out in Watford, you could try Carluccio’s, a reliably high quality Italian, Wagamama or Banana Tree for popular Asian flavours, Bar Bodega on Rickmansworth Road, or the Goodfood Tandoori for some seriously enticing Indian. Elsewhere and for quality traditional pubs offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, try the Essex Arms, the Horns or the Oddfellows.
