Switzerland is officially named the Swiss Confederation. This western European country is bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. Landlocked, this country is divided between the Alps, the Swiss Plateau, and the Jura. Switzerland is a contemporary tourist destination offering a number of outdoor adventures and modern urban activities.

Switzerland is one of the richest countries in the world and home to the second largest UN office. This founding member of the European Free Trade Association is host to many UN agencies, like the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and several hundred additional international organisations. In addition, there are many sport federations and associations located in Switzerland. These include the International Basketball Federation, the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and the International Ice Hockey Federation. The International Olympic Committee is based in Lausanne. There are several large multinational corporations in Switzerland, including Glencore, Nestlé, Novartis, and Zurich Financial Services. The country offers industrial, commercial, and office space throughout its urban and rural areas.

Entertainment And Dining Out

There are many locations in Switzerland where you can go skiing. Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland offers an impressive selection of restaurants, bars and discos. Many skiers use this village as a base camp for long-haul excursions to the slopes of First, Männlichen, and Kleine Scheidegg. From Grindelwald, the resorts of Wengen and Mürren are accessible by cog railway and cable car. Swiss cuisine has a lot of regional influences and has a lot of variety. A popular speciality is fondue, a delicious concoction of Gruyère and Vacherin cheese, melted and mixed with white wine, flour, Kirsch and a little garlic. There are other cheese specialities, including Emmental and Tête de Moine. Pork sausages or salami are used in variety of local recipes including Beinwurst, Engadinerwurst, Knackerli, Landjäger, and Leberwurst (liver pâté). There is a large selection of Swiss wines available throughout the country. Swiss beer is also popular - both lager and dark beers.

Transport Information

Zurich Airport is Switzerland’s largest international gateway, with others including Geneva Airport, Bern Airport, Lugano Airport, St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport, and Sion Airport. The country is extremely well-connected and has an extensive network or roads linking it to the surrounding countries. Within Switzerland, a number of major roadways criss-cross the country with the main motorway, the A1, running from Luasanne to Zurich, via Berne. Switzerland boasts an extremely efficient public transport network. The Swiss Federal Railway provides intercity services across the entire country while urban commuter rail systems are used in the Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Berne, Lausanne and Neuchâtel for intra-city links. Mountain rails also operate in the Swiss Alps. Buses supplement the rail network and stations are located next to the train stations.
