Portugal is officially called the Portuguese Republic. Located on the westernmost part of mainland Europe, Portugal is situated on the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, and by Spain to the north and east. Portuguese territory also includes the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. The country is named after its second largest city, Porto, whose Latin name was Portus Cale. The capital of Portugal is Lisban. Tourist hotspots in Portugal are Lisbon, Algarve, and Madeira, but there are many additional areas, such as the Douro Valley, the island of Porto Santo, and Alentejo.

Portugal’s economy is focused on exports, private investment, and development of the high-tech sector. Portugal is the world’s leading producer of cork. Most industry, business, and finance concerns are situated in Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas. The districts of Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, and Leiria are the biggest economic centres outside those two main metropolitan areas. Entertainment And Dining Out

The sun-kissed shoreline of Portugal is a must see for anyone visiting the country. There are dramatic, end-of-the-world cliffs, wild dune-covered beaches, protected coves, and long, sandy islands. The cities in Portugal, such as Lisbon and Porto, offer riverside views, looming cathedrals, and cobblestone streets, along with the modern urban amenities. Seafood is a regular staple for dining in Portugal. The salt cod forms the base of hundreds of recipes. Anchovy, bass, clams, mussels, salmon, sea bream, sole, and swordfish are also popular. The Brazilian spice peri-peri is widely used to flavour chicken and shrimp, while Goan curry spices are added to a variety of dishes and broths. Meat lovers can gorge on espetada (grilled skewers of beef with garlic), leitão (suckling pig), and cozido à portuguesa, which mixes beef, pork, sausage, and vegetables in a delicious dish.

Transport Information

In Portugal the most important airports are in Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal (Madeira) and Ponta Delgada (Azores). These airports are managed by the national airport authority group ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal. Portugal has international airports at Lisbon (LIS), Porto (OPO), and Faro (FAO). Portugal’s flagship international airline is TAP Air Portugal. The main domestic airline is PGA Portugália Airlines. There is a national railway system that extends throughout the country and into Spain. Portugal has road routes between the main cities and towns along the coast, as well as roads throughout the countryside.
