Essen is a city in North Rhine–Westphalia Land, a state in western Germany. It is situated between the Rhine-Herne Canal and the Ruhr River. The Ruhr is dammed at Essen to form Baldeney Lake. The southern part of Essen offers wooded area and parks. The city is home to Folkwang College of Art and the University of Duisberg-Essen. Within the city of Essen there are concert halls and a critically acclaimed philharmonic orchestra. The city also houses a grand selection of museums, including the Museum Folkwang, featuring 19th and 20th century art, and the Ruhr Museum, with natural history, art and cultural collections.

Essen is home to several large companies, among them the ThyssenKrupp industrial conglomerate. The largest company headquartered in Essen is Germany’s second-largest electric utility RWE AG. Essen also hosts a portion of the corporate headquarters of Schenker AG, the logistics division of Deutsche Bahn. Zeche Zollverein has been called the most beautiful coal mine in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site hosts several diverse cultural options. It now houses an outstanding design centre and several museums. It is also famous for its Bauhaus architecture. One of the most unusual experiences you can have in Essen is to ride aboard the Ferris-wheel-like Sonnenrad through the smelters of the coking plant. From mid-December to mid-January, there’s an outdoor ice skating rink, also at the coking plant. Area restaurants include Mintrops Stadthotel Margarethenhöhe serving Asian cuisine, Gummersbach, Fürstenbergstr offers French cuisine and reservations recommended, and Capobianco, Rottstr is a classic Italian restaurant serving vegetarian options - reservations are also recommended for this restaurant.

Transport Information

The largest international airport close to Essen, Germany is located in Düsseldorf. Düsseldorf-International (IATA:DUS) is 30 km away or about 30 minutes by train. By car, Essen is located on Autobahn A40. From Hanover take Autobahn A2 to A40, Autobahn A45 from Frankfurt, or Autobahn A52 from Düsseldorf.
