One of the places to see, a seaside resort and port on the Black Sea Coast, called Batumi. This is the capital of the Ajarian Autonomous Republic. It is situated near the Turkish border, within 20km or 12.5 miles. The town has a definite Turkish character and the region is a lush, subtropical climate that is set among citrus groves and tea plantations. The cuisine of Georgia utilises a lot of walnuts which are often used to thicken soups and sauces. Cafés, restaurants, and street-food traditions are well established in Georgia. The markets are full of locally grown fruit and vegetables. Local specialties include desserts made with walnuts, coated in caramelised sugar, gozinaki, or in churchkhela, the nuts are then threaded on string then dipped in thickened, sweetened grape juice which is subsequently dried into chewy, flavourful ’candles’. Lobio is a bean and walnut salad.
