Historic Rouen is the capital of Upper Normandy on the River Seine, built by the Roman Empire at the very lowest point on the river. The city is just 90 minutes from Paris and has a great transport network for getting around the city and to surrounding areas. Rouen is a well-preserved, medieval city and has a rich and often bloodthirsty history. The city is well-known for being Joan of Arc’s place of death, where she was burnt at the stake. Rouen has also been home to a number of famous and notable figures throughout history. The city is filled with churches, museums and has a famous cathedral, and is the fourth largest port in the country.

Business Information

As Rouen is a large port, the city is a thriving centre of commerce, with the metropolitan part of the city having a population 5 times that of suburban areas. Most of the city’s Gross National Product is made up from the service industry and economic trade, and Rouen attracts many multi-national corporations each year. Shell and Renault have production bases here, and a number of other major company headquarters can also be found in Rouen. Rouen also has a very famous business school, which is ranked 5th highest in France and is over 140 years old.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Culture is one of the focal points of Rouen’s tourist trade, and there are plenty of things to see and do during the day. Rouen has a great variety of museums and galleries, covering different areas of history and points of interest. There are also a number of very well-preserved landmarks dating back to the Roman times, and the cathedral is well-known for having been lovingly depicted by Monet through a series of 28 paintings. Rouen has a number of great restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Gill Cote Bistro on the Vieux-Marche.

Transport Information

Rouen’s city centre is relatively compact and thus easy to traverse on foot or by bike, which is how many of its residents choose to get around. There are regular bus services running throughout the city, and a tram line which stops at various important spots and is a helpful way to travel for tourists and those new to the city. Rouen Airport is 10km southeast of Rouen and has scheduled flights heading throughout France and around the world. Mainline trains are available to Paris and other major French cities.
