Known for being the central business district of Hong Kong, the Central District houses some of the most expensive office space destinations in the world. Positioned on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, the Central District is the preferred place of residence for many multinationals, with financial corporations, consulates and government headquarters established in the district. Originally referred to as Chong Wan, the name Central was adopted by many after the MTR metro system’s Island Line was constructed there in the early 1980’s, which connected key stations on the island.

Business Information

Among its massive skyscrapers you will find the offices of HSBC banking corporation, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, CLP Group and PIMCO, who all reside within the world leading financial centre. The trading currency of the island is the Hong Kong dollar, which features heavily on global trading markets and ranks eighth as the most traded exchange in the world. Serviced office space in Hong Kong is notoriously limited, with its office sector being one of the most sought after in the world. Businesses taking a Hong Kong office will benefit from low taxation, free trade markets and a strong economy as well as access to a large population of skilled workers.

Entertainment and Dining Out

The Central District is renowned for being the heart of all commercial activities in Hong Kong. As well as playing host to some of its tallest skyscrapers in Hong Kong, the Central District’s many marbled atriums and glittering halls stacked with designer boutiques, connected by Midlevel elevators and walkway systems will not only be a spectacle to beyond, - like its buildings – it will be a spectacle you can also participate in. Head down to Bonham Strand West, Hollywood Road and Cat Street for the hottest and most famous shopping spots in the district, or over to the longest outdoor escalator in the world on Conduit Road.

Transport Information

The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) is Hong Kong’s premier rail service which conveniently has its transport signage written in English. The MTR system is the most frequently used public transportation system in Hong Kong, with over five millions journeys a day on average completed on its lines. The service connects directly with Chek Lap Kok international airport on Lantua Island, but operates under a different name: Airport Express. There is a comprehensive bus service in the district, with three different service providers to choose from, although English only speakers are advised to have their chosen destination written down in Mandarin, as it is common for bus drivers operating in the district not to speak English.
