The Wan Chai district lies along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, neighbouring the Admiralty and Causeway Bay districts. Wan Chai is a metropolitan area and one of the busiest commercial areas in Hong Kong for small and medium sized companies. Wan Chai is one of the first areas to be developed in Hong Kong, and has a high population. Among many of the famous buildings standing in Wan Chai, the Hong Kong Convention Centre, Central Plaza and Hopewell Centre are some of the most notable. The district has undergone several urban renewal projects in recent years after many of its residential zones were facing urban decay.

Business Information

The Wan Chai district is a major trading and commercial centre, with a number of government offices, major banks, famous five star restaurants, international company headquarters and embassies all situated there. There are many international exhibitions and fairs held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, which provides a significant amount of custom to local businesses from tourists visiting the events.

Entertainment and Dining Out

Wan Chai is a centre for cultural performances in the region and a major hub for foreign and Chinese culture in Hong Kong. Among many of the cultural organisations based in Wan Chai, the offices of the British Council, Goethe Institute and Alliance Francaise are some of the most notable. The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Hong Kong Arts Centre are the most popular theatrical and cultural performance centres are also based there.

Transport Information

The first cross harbour tunnel to cross Victoria Harbour and connect Hong Kong Island to the mainland was built in Wan Chai. For fast and effective transportation throughout the major districts of the island, including Wan Chai, take a tube on the Island Line at Wan Chai Station or travel by road along the main arterial highway spanning the northern coast of the Hong Kong. Travel is also possible by ferry, with many ports in Wan Chai allowing for immediate transportation by boat. Hong Kong International Airport is easily accessible on the MTR, Island Line, by a 40minute commute.
